What does Microsoft’s end of support for Internet Explorer mean?
Microsoft will no longer support the Internet Explorer desktop browser application as of 6/15/2022.
What application is Microsoft supporting to replace it?
The Edge desktop browser application is the currently supported replacement of Internet Explorer.
What application is LTi supporting to replace it?
The Edge desktop browser will be supported by LTi for use with ASPIRE functionality as it is currently supported by Microsoft. Other browsers will not be supported by LTi for use with the ASPIRE system.
When will the Internet Explorer browser no longer be available?
Upon upgrading to the Windows 11 operating system Internet Explorer is no longer available as a Windows feature or desktop application.
Is Internet Explorer still available in Windows 10?
The Internet Explorer desktop browser application and its corresponding Windows Feature are still available in Windows 10.
When were changes made in ASPIRE to start using Edge?
Beginning in 5.20.32 LTi implemented changes in the ASPIRE system to utilize Edge instead of Internet Explorer for all functions that required the Internet Explorer desktop browser application. This includes system reports, the Business Partner Portal and additional features that require an external browser session.
What pre-requisites are needed on user machines upon upgrading to 5.20.32+?
The WebView2 runtime application will need to be installed on user machines in order to implement the 5.20.32 release of ASPIRE and subsequent versions. This feature is automatically installed with the Windows 11 operating system and as of 6/27/22, it will be included in Windows 10 updates automatically. The .NET 6 Core application will need to be installed on all application servers and LTi has implemented this on all of our hosted environments.
What is Internet Explorer mode in Edge?
Internet Explorer mode is a feature in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that enables compatibility of older websites to be rendered in Edge.
Does ASPIRE need to use Internet Explorer mode in Edge?
Users will only need to use Internet Explorer mode in order to utilize configurable forms and the Business Partner Portal in ASPIRE for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 machines.
Will all features of ASPIRE that used Internet Explorer now open in Edge?
No. External features that required the Internet Explorer desktop browser application will open in Edge beginning in 5.20.32. Internal features that create additional windows within the ASPIRE application have been changed to use Edge if possible but some features that utilize the MSHTML (Trident) engine will still open in Internet Explorer but don’t require Internet Explorer to be installed on the user’s machine. This specifically includes Configurable Forms and other internal features.
What is the MSHTML (Trident) engine?
The MSHTML (Trident) engine is the Internet Explorer platform for development of applications that utilize IE functions. It is unaffected by the 6/15/2022 end of support of the IE desktop app and will continue to be supported until at least 2029 per Microsoft.
How does ASPIRE use the MSHTML (Trident) engine?
This engine is used in several system areas to use JavaScript language that calls functions of Internet Explorer. It is most-heavily relied upon for the creation, maintenance and use of Configurable Forms.
Can customers upgrade to Windows 11 without upgrading ASPIRE?
Customers that want to upgrade user machines to the Windows 11 operating system will need to upgrade to the 5.20.32 release of ASPIRE in order to retain all supported system functionality.
Can customers using Windows 10 on user machines upgrade to 5.20.32?
Customers can upgrade to the 5.20.32 release of ASPIRE or a subsequent version and remain on the Windows 10 operating system. The Windows Feature for Internet Explorer 11 must remain enabled on user machines however the Internet Explorer desktop browser application can be disabled by Active Directory Group Policy if required by the customer’s IT policy.
Will LTi be doing further development for Internet Explorer replacement in ASPIRE?
All worked that has been deemed as required for the replacement of the Internet Explorer desktop application has been completed as of the 5.20.34 release of ASPIRE. At this time there is no additional development planned for ASPIRE as all features are using technology that is supported by Microsoft until at least 2029.
